Service, domains and intellectual property
SWELLRADAR is an ocean and surf-forecast information service operated on swellradar.ch and swellradar.surf. Product design, original copy, interface elements, software and SWELLRADAR branding are protected to the extent provided by applicable law.
Forecasts, observations, place data and other third-party material remain subject to the rights and terms of their respective providers. External links lead to services outside our control; their operators are responsible for their own content and data practices.

SWELLRADAR uses the data required to run accounts, preferences and alerts. It is not built around advertising profiles or the sale of personal data.
Controller
The controller is Limelight Pictures GmbH, Brown Boveri Platz 3, 5400 Baden, Switzerland. Privacy requests can be sent to hello@limelightpictures.ch.
Data processed
When you visit: technical request and security data such as IP address, time, requested route, browser or device information may be processed to deliver and protect the service.
When you create an account: display name, email address, a salted password hash, verification status, account timestamps and essential session information are processed. SWELLRADAR does not store the readable password.
When you personalise SWELLRADAR: saved spots, alert rules, surf level, board type, preferred wave range, preferred surf time, maximum travel distance and planner settings are stored. If you explicitly choose “Use my location”, the browser supplies rounded coordinates; SWELLRADAR does not continuously track your movement.
When alerts are enabled: spot, thresholds, delivery preference and a limited delivery history are processed to prevent duplicate notifications and show recent matches.
Purposes and legal grounds
Data is processed to provide accounts and synchronisation, generate personal surf guidance, deliver requested alerts, maintain security, prevent misuse, diagnose failures and meet legal obligations. Depending on the context, processing is based on providing the requested service, legitimate operational and security interests, consent, or an applicable legal obligation under Swiss data-protection law and, where applicable, the GDPR.
Storage on your device
Unsigned preferences are kept in local browser storage. A temporary session-storage marker avoids repeated verification-email requests. Signed-in users receive one essential, secure and HTTP-only session cookie with a maximum lifetime of 30 days. SWELLRADAR currently uses no advertising cookies and no third-party marketing trackers.
Service providers and data sources
Cloudflare provides application hosting, network delivery and database infrastructure. Resend is used to deliver verification and surf-alert emails when enabled. These providers process the technical or contact data required for their service.
Forecast requests use Open-Meteo and the models it makes available. Nearby observation requests use NOAA NDBC and partners. These server-side requests contain forecast or station coordinates, not your SWELLRADAR account identity. Place information includes OpenStreetMap and Wikidata source material.
The interactive map loads its geographic style, tiles, labels and related map assets from OpenFreeMap, which uses OpenStreetMap data. Your browser requests the map areas you view; SWELLRADAR does not intentionally attach your account identity to those map requests.
Providers may process data in Switzerland, the EEA, the United States or other countries. Where required, transfers are handled using recognised legal safeguards or another lawful transfer basis.
Retention and security
Account and preference data is kept while the account is active or as needed to provide the service. Verification links expire after 24 hours; normal sessions after at most 30 days. Other records are retained only for operational, security or legal needs and are then deleted or anonymised where appropriate.
SWELLRADAR uses access controls, password hashing, token hashing, secure cookies and rate limiting. No online service can promise absolute security.
Your choices and rights
You can use the forecast without an account, deny browser location permission, keep preferences only on the current device, disable alerts and sign out at any time. Subject to applicable law, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability or object to processing. You may also withdraw consent for future processing and contact the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner.

03 · Forecast safety

A forecast is decision support. The final safety call is always made at the coast.
Information, not navigation
SWELLRADAR provides modelled marine and weather guidance for recreational planning. It is not an official warning service, emergency service, navigation product, lifesaving service or substitute for local expertise.
Forecast uncertainty
Wave height, period, direction, wind, tide context, currents, ratings and “Best Surf Window” recommendations can differ from real conditions. Forecast models have spatial and temporal limits; buoys can be distant, delayed or unavailable; sandbanks, reefs, access and water quality can change faster than the model.
Before entering the water
Check official weather and marine warnings, lifeguard advice, local signage, water-quality notices, tide state, access and exit points. Observe the lineup from shore, account for your ability and equipment, and do not surf alone in conditions beyond your experience.
Alerts and personal rankings
Alerts, confidence scores, travel estimates and personalised rankings are automated aids. Delivery can be late or fail, and a high score never confirms that conditions are safe. Do not rely on a notification as your only reason to enter the water or travel.
Availability and liability
We work to keep SWELLRADAR accurate and available but cannot guarantee completeness, correctness, uninterrupted operation or suitability for a particular session. To the extent permitted by applicable law, Limelight Pictures GmbH excludes liability arising from reliance on forecast guidance, third-party data, external links or service interruptions. Mandatory legal liability remains unaffected.
